Diamond Cutting

Added: 2008-05-09 12:54:30

Diamond cutting is a special process that demands lot of effort and knowledge. The article provides information about diamond cutting.

Diamond is the hardest known mineral that is why there is only one way of cutting it - with an other diamond. Most of the diamonds found on earth are used in jewelry but during the mechanical processes each diamond loses over half of its weight. Non-faceted and unpolished diamond looks like an ordinary piece of glass, it receives the beautiful look that attracts thousands of eyes only after it had been processed and cut. Stone-cutting demands lots of skills and knowledge of crystallography. Round brilliant-cut diamonds are the most popular gemstones.

Diamond cutting step by step

Each diamond should be marked, cut and faceted before it is launched to the market and given under close inspection of experts. Each diamond is unique and therefore it is essential to examine it in detail so as the achieved stone could be as big as possible. Marking is the first step of cutting diamonds. The next step is cleaving - a method of dividing the diamond with one single stroke. Cleaving is always done along the previously determined line. The stone is held in a wooden holder, a tiny groove is scratched with another diamond in the place where it is supposed to be cleaved. Diamond is cut after a heavy steel blade struck it.

Diamond sawing enables cutting diamond in any place regardless its structure. The stone is held by gypsum and limestone to a special copper head and is cut with a special thin saw that consists of thin pieces of a special alloy with diamond dust on the edge. Sawing enables to achieve a desired shape of the stone. The next step is called girdling and faceting. When a diamond is faceted it is placed in the pliers with an appropriate angle. Faceting is done by the disc covered with oil and diamond dust.

The usage of diamonds:

- used for production of abrasives and cutting machinery
- as an element for scientific and medical equipment
- for production of artificial fibers
- for production of hardness testers and phonograph needles
- for designing luxurious jewelry
- in jewelry - special cut diamonds are called brilliants
- they are said to be the most valuable gemstones, only 10-20% of them can be used for jewelry
