Emerald gem stones are highly valued by people in the whole world. Apart from that rings, necklaces and pendants with emerald are said to have special properties.

Emerald is a type of beryl. It owes its green color to a small amount of chromium and vanadium. Emeralds are precious stones appreciated in jewelry, their price is even higher than the price of diamonds. The types which are used in jewelry are extremely rare, are found only in several places in the world. Emeralds are found in: Columbia, Russia and Republic of South Africa. In various museums there are many emeralds which had not been cut nor faceted. The Crown of the Andes is probably the most famous. It weighs around 1/2 kilogram and contains 477 emeralds. It was made in XVI century in Popayan. The epidemic broke out and inhabitants of the city started to organize masses to the Holy Mother to ask her for saving the city from the disease. The miracle happened and people decided to create the crown for the Holy Mother so as to thank her for help. It took six years for twenty four jewelers to create the Crown of the Andes before it was put in the church. Although there were several attempts of stealing it, the crown stayed in its place. Finally, an archbishop agreed to sell the crown and use the money for other church activities. It was bought by an American jeweler who used to lend the crown to galleries and museums. These days no one knows what happened to the Crown of the Andes, in 1997 it was bought by an anonymous buyer. Other important emeralds include: Gachala Emerald, Chalk Emerald and Meidan-i-Noor.
