Obsidian Mineral

Added: 2008-09-09 12:17:41

Obsidian is a mineral of an interesting origin.

Obsidian is a volcanic stone formed from an extrusive igneous rock. Its name derives from the name of a tribe Obsius in Ethiopia. In ancient times, obsidian was believed to help cope with broken heart and protect sensitive people. It balances the work of a digestive track and reduces the risk of viral infections. Obsidian is found in margins of rhyolitic lava flows, most commonly in Mexico and the USA. It is used in jewelry for its color and beautiful light reflections it gives. Collectors usually search for green obsidian, snowflake obsidian and a type called "apache tears". The last type of obsidian is very fragile and delicate, it is also sensible to temperature changes.
