Opal

Added: 2008-09-18 13:30:56

Opal is a mineral which can have various colors and shades. It is an expensive gemstone valued by jewelrs in the whole world.

According to many experts opal is one of the most valuable gems. Its name derives from the word heat. Australian scientists believed that opal is a part of rainbow which was thrown into the Earth. Opals can get various colors which is connected with their structure. Opal's color used to fascinate poets and magicians from ancient times as it was a mysterious gemstone. In the Middle-Ages a ring with opal was believed to have miraculous powers. A stone of such kind can be found in the Cathedral Treasury in Cracow, people used to believe that it heals headaches. Deposits of opal were found in the USA and Italy. It is a gemstone which is good for Virgos and Capricorns. A synthetic opal which is so similar to the natural stone that it is hard to differentiate them was invented in 1964. The only difference is in price because natural opals are more expensive than diamonds or rubies.
