Added: 2008-07-17 15:03:29

Polish amber also known as Baltic amber is a famous gem appreciated by women all around the world.

History of amber:

Amber is a fossil resin that comes from conifer trees that grew 40-50 million years ago. Amber has several names which depend on its color and shade. The most common colors include red, orange, brown, yellow or ecru. Blue, green, violet or black ambers are rarely met. This beautiful fossil has been used in ornamentation and jewelry for thousands of years. Religious clothes and worshiped objects were ornamented with this precious fossil. It was used for creation of necklaces, talismans, caskets or boxes. It acted as a monetary object in the northern countries, amber had some healing properties, it cures headaches, runny nose or diseases of the eye. Amber also contained signs of life and time passing as there are plant or animal parts trapped inside. However, the most valuable ambers are clear and transparent and they usually come from the inside of the tree.

The use of amber:

Apart from decorative properties amber helps to maintain health:

1) Headaches can be removed by a compress made of amber
2) Migraines can be reduced by wearing special hair bands with amber sewn-in
3) Amber necklaces are good for sore throats and diseases of thyroid gland
4) Rheumatoid pains of muscles and joints can be cured by sitting on special armchair covers with amber
5) Wearing amber jewelry, scarves and rubbing with amber alcoholic tincture reduces diseases of the digestive tract
6) Wearing jewelry with amber or sitting near the lamp with amber relieved from stress and tiredness

Amber tincture recipe (for external use):

Ingredients:
20-25g amber in special jars
100-125ml spirit
Procedure:
Put the amber pieces into a vessel and pour spirit inside, leave for 10 days in a warm place, stir the liquid several times. You can apply the tincture to painful areas of the body. Before rubbing skin with the tincture it's good to lubricate the area with some essential oil so as to prevent skin from getting dry.

Amber in jewelry:

The value of amber is appreciated by jewelers, goldsmiths and artists because amber framed in gold or silver is a perfect decoration for any occasion. It's a combination of beauty, strength and nature, that is why it became an amulet. An everlasting beauty of colors, shades and signs of past times set in this fossil resin are clearly visible when we look at every particular piece of amber. Baltic amber is very popular and polish amber jewelry are valued on the worldwide markets. Just think how rich is the history and how many properties amber has.
