Rhodium plating means covering silver with a thin layer of rhodium. This creates an interesting effect and an attractive finishing of rhodium plated jewelry.

When we enter a jewelry shop we often notice rings which resemble white gold, but with a different price. Why is that so? Isn't it a fake? This is usually caused by plating silver jewelry with rhodium. According to encyclopedia rhodium is a rare element discovered in 1803. It is characterized by extreme hardness, that is probably why it was considered to become a platinum substitute. Apparently, it is used as an electrical contact material, in production of optical instruments or jewelry decoration. Rhodium plated jewelry has received recognition in the market due to its properties and price. Surprisingly, pure rhodium is much more expensive than platinum or gold, maybe that's why rhodium plated silver jewelry is so popular. Nowadays, rhodium plated products are a competition for platinum and gold, it's hard to differentiate them with a naked eye. So why not indulge in some jewelry shopping more often?
