It is an ordinary cross with a ring surrounding it that has been known among the pre-Christian religions for ages. Even though its origin is different from Christianity it belongs to the small group of those accepted by Christian Church. A Celtic Cross is sometimes treated as a charm or amulet. Free-standing, high crosses have been built in Cornwall, Wales, Scotland or Ireland since 8th century. The history of a Celtic Cross is long and interesting. The circle which surrounds the cross is said to symbolize the sun. According to other beliefs it expresses perfection and regularity. In the South-Western Europe, where British and Irish Christians accepted the cross, it was connected with the god Odin. A Christian cross differs from the Celtic one in several elements: all four arms stand out of the circle, the lower part is much longer than the rest and creates a base of the cross. The Celtic Cross is presented in all Celtic ornaments, especially in the Great Britain. It appeared on a coin in Northern Ireland in 1996 and is believed to symbolize organizations which fight for independence of ethnic minorities, it's a symbol of rebellion or political fraction. Supposedly it used to be an inspiration for the creators of a popular peace symbol. Apart from that, it became the base for neopagan religions.
