The name Maltese Cross is one of the most commonly used for describing that sign. It is also called Amalfi cross, a symbol of order of Christian warriors. White Maltese Cross is a symbol of Knights Hospitaller whereas a green one is a symbol of the Order of Saint Lazarus. In Poland the red cross became a symbol of SAR. The Maltese Cross is eight-pointed formed by eight "V" letters joined together at their tips. It used to be a symbol of Amalfi, an Italian republic, whose inhabitants opened a hospital in Jerusalem in 1070 that gave the beginning of the Knights Hospitaller order.
Today's Maltese cross was used by Benedictine Monks since 1023 who took over the responsibility for this new brotherhood. However, the symbol was taken by Knights Hospitaller. On January, 9th and January, 31st the Pope Sixtus V accepted the Cross by his Papal bull.
