The History of Wedding Rings

Added: 2008-11-20 13:37:32

Have you ever thought about the history of wedding rings? Where do they come from and what's their meaning? The article tries to give information about the history of wedding rings.

The first mention about wedding rings appeared in the ancient Egypt. A wedding ring in the shape of a circle was supposed to express everlasting love. Egyptians used iron for their production, these were Israeli people who began using gold for creating wedding rings. The tendencies and preferences of people connected with wedding rings have changed several times, in the 20th century men also wore them. In Poland there is a tradition of buying gold, platinum or titanium rings, however, people in relationships wear silver wedding rings which are meant to symbolize unity with the partner. It is not the only way one can wear a wedding ring, some people get a tattoo in the form of a wedding ring. The greatest advantage of such a tattoo is that it's impossible to loose it, and it depends on individual taste whether you like it or not. Wedding rings are the only symbol of marriage. In other cultures, for instance, Hassid women shave their heads for the wedding and afterwards they wear wigs or babushkas. In Greece only men wear gold wedding rings, women wear silver as people of lower status than men. American and African people use symbols as wedding decorations e.g. tattoos, piercing or special clothes and accessories.
