Wedding Superstitions

Added: 2008-07-15 12:46:48

Wedding superstitions are something which we are more than likely to be interested in. Wedding customs and traditions give us plenty of ideas on dresses, wedding days or rings.

Most of us are probably aware of the famous and popular rhyme "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue". But have you heard of the one which tells all the superstitions connected with wedding dress colors:

Married in White, you have chosen right
Married in Grey, you will go far away,
Married in Black, you will wish yourself back,
Married in Red, you will wish yourself dead,
Married in Green, ashamed to be seen,
Married in Blue, you will always be true,
Married in Pearl, you will live in a whirl,
Married in Yellow, ashamed of your fellow,
Married in Brown, you will live in the town,
Married in Pink, your spirit will sink

It is also unlucky for the bride to make her own wedding dress. There are several omens which are said to be lucky: a rainbow, a sun shine on the bride, a black cat and a chimney sweeper on the road to the Church.

Bad luck, on the other hand, is brought by seeing a pig, hare or lizard running across the road, or spotting an open grave.

When it comes to the time of wedding the rhyme below says which month is the best for getting married:

"Married when the year is new, he'll be loving, kind & true,
When February birds do mate, You wed nor dread your fate.
If you wed when March winds blow, joy and sorrow both you'll know.
Marry in April when you can, Joy for Maiden & for Man.
Marry in the month of May, and you'll surely rue the day.
Marry when June roses grow, over land and sea you'll go.
Those who in July do wed, must labour for their daily bred.
Whoever wed in August be, many a change is sure to see
Marry in September's shrine, your living will be rich and fine.
If in October you do marry, love will come but riches tarry.
If you wed in bleak November, only joys will come, remember.
When December snows fall fast, marry and true love will last."

It is believed that if the groom drops the wedding band during the ceremony, the marriage is doomed.

The bride must enter her home by the front door, and cannot fall - hence the custom of carrying the bride over the threshold.

The spouse who goes to sleep first on the wedding day will be the first to die.

There are also several superstitions connected with the bridal shower: the first gift opened by the bride should be the first gift she uses. Everything the bride says as she opens her gifts will be repeated on her wedding night so it's good to note the comments down. The person who gives the third gift will soon have a baby.

On the wedding day the girls should throw flower petals so as
the married couple could have many chances to have babies.

Put a penny in your shoe to make sure you are wealthy during your marriage.

Above all, the groom can't see the bride in all her glory until this the most important day of their life. When a bride cries on her wedding day these will be the last tears she will shed.
