Silver soldering

Added: 2008-05-30 14:28:25

Silver soldering is a process without which production of silver would be impossible. But for soldering all jewelry items would be simple and artists would have to limit their creativity to an enormous degree.

Soldering it is joining two metals together by melting them and flowing a filler metal into them. The fillers are materials with lower melting temperature than the metals joined together. There are several types of solders: soft soldering - a melting point of filler metal is below 400°C whereas hard soldering has higher - 550°C melting point. The process of joining the two metals or two parts of a metal is called cohesion. The type of soldering is adjusted to the materials which are being soldered. Soft soldering is used for metals that are not exposed to heavy burdens or pressure while hard soldering is used for joining metal plates, sections, parts of machinery and parts of tools. The first part of soldering involves preparing a given material for soldering which means mechanical and chemical cleaning. Chemical cleaning includes pickling and de-greasing, the first one is done with acid pickle treatment, the latter with solvents. The next step of soldering includes choosing appropriate parameters: both electrodes and soldering wire made of copper or bronze can be used as a flux. Soft solders are ploys of tin, antimony and lead, their melting temperature is 183 - 300°C. Hard solders are made of ploys of copper and zinc and other substances. There are also silver solders, they are ploys of silver, copper and zinc.

Silver soldering (soft)
Soldering is done with soldering tool, melting furnace, pickling and fire.

Silver soldering (hard)
This includes gas soldering, electrical, melting furnace, pickling.
