Silver Holy Medals

Added: 2008-10-15 13:59:29

Sterling silver holy medal pendants have rich history and special religious meaning. The article presents information about silver holy medals or medallions.

The word medallion derives from "medal". Holy medals are usually associated with the faithful because they wear them most often. They are given to children at First Holy Communion, they are also worn as a symbol of faith. Common beliefs ascribed an ability to protect its owner from bad powers and diseases. Each holy medal has its own history and tradition and it's up to an individual which one to choose. One of the most popular holy medal is a one which appeared to Saint Catherine Laboure during the revelation she experienced. Its front side presents the Holy Mother standing on the globe, which symbolizes her almighty rule. Her foot stands on a snake symbolizing the devil, this means she has power over the evil. She takes under her arms everyone who wants to be protected. She wears many rings which shine rays of light over the globe, they symbolize grace she sends to the believers. The Holy Mother revealed this medallion to Catherine Laboure on November, 27 1830. Around the margin of the frame appeared the words "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee." The reverse of the medal presents a large letter M, the first letter of name Mary, and above the letter there''s a cross Jesus died on. Holy Mother stands below her Son still remains in communion with Him. There are 12 stars around which symbolize Mary's power she had been given from God. Two hearts, Jesus's and Mary's, are near each other which means they love all people in the whole world. The left side of the medal presents the heart of Jesus, it is bleeding because of the crown of thorns is placed on it. The right side of the holy medal shows Mary's heart which symbolizes her pain caused by the tragedy of her Son. At the same time, she shares her pain with Him and she sacrifices herself for the whole humanity. These days, another famous holy medal is called the Scapular of Blessed Virgin Mary which is believed to be the sign of Mary's love towards people. At first, the name scapular meant the outer part of clothes monks used to wear for work. With time, it symbolized carrying the burden of everyday life by all followers of the Christ. Saint Mary teaches us how to be attentive, search for God's words everywhere, discover and share them with other people. It is closely related with help given to our sisters and brothers in their most difficult times. The scapular medallion expresses trust in Mary's power and is supposed to free people's souls from the purgatory. This particular medallion obligates to live according to Christian believes and in conformity with one's needs.
